Packing vs Moving – Which One Can You Do Yourself?

When you are making efforts to save money it is completely understandable that you want to carry out as many things as you can by yourself. Splurging money on unnecessary services is one of the best ways to end up with no money at all. However, what services can you really deem unnecessary and why?

Today we are going to look into two different aspects of moving – the packing part and the moving part itself. We will see which you can do by yourself (even with lot of time invested) and which one should better be left to professionals, even if you have friends who can help you. Let’s see!

Can You Pack By Yourself?

Here is the thing – packing is not as simple as people think. It takes a lot of work, mainly because you have no idea where to start and how to go about the entire process. So you waste time, and often you waste your efforts trying to pack things up properly.

But even though you may end up wasting quite a lot of your hours, you can still pack everything yourself. Especially if you rent moving boxes for the job, you can be done much quicker, because now you have standardized boxes and you know precisely how to separate things into them (you don’t have to figure that out through trial and error).

Additionally, packing time can greatly be reduced if you ask your friends to help you. The bad part here? Most people are not comfortable with friends packing their stuff up. Not to mention that your friend likely has as much experience as you, so the overall efficiency would not suddenly skyrocket.

Obviously, getting professional help does have its merits here, but we are going to say that you can probably handle packing by yourself without too much worries. A great thing that will help out a lot is to watch tutorials on efficient packing practices, so you can get used to the idea of proper packing techniques.

What About Carrying Stuff?

While you can definitely pack things, the real heavy lifting comes down to carrying. And we mean “heavy” in both the literal and figurative sense. Because lifting heavy stuff without proper preparation can be disastrous for most people.

In fact, even if you get friends, you may be ill-equipped to transport large furniture for example. At this point you are better off getting the services of professionals. Luckily, loading and unloading by itself does not cost all that much money. If you score movers that charge by the hour and do not slack around, you can move quite cheaply.

Of course, nothing can stop you from trying to carry things on your own, but be warned that this can lead to injury. You can go online and read the horror stories yourself. One of our writers actually experienced this recently, as he was trying to push a heavy box overhead. Ouch!
