Packing may seem like a simple job, but actually takes quite a lot of consideration. In fact, there is some serious skill that goes into packing, and today we are going to explore that. For starters, we are going to look into what you need to know about the basics and then we will give you some advice on how to make packing (and unpacking) more efficient and effective. Let’s go!
Having The Foundation
The first thing you have to know about packing is that you cannot just take any kind of box and fill it up with stuff. Plastic packing boxes are necessary if you want to have the best experience. Not only are they more sturdy than regular cardboard boxes, but they are also easily stackable.
That being said, you should still know the simple rule – heavy at the bottom, light on top. That means you should not put a heavy box on top ever! No matter how sturdy the boxes are, they still can break if enough pressure is put on them. So don’t do that!
Additionally, you have to know your stuff about packing materials. Bubble and stretch wrap are an absolute must for different situations, but packing peanuts may also come in handy. Utilizing sheets, towels and clothes as padding can be an ingenious way to solve your problems, but are not always the best choice.
Checklists and Color Coding
You can pack as good as a professional, but if you do not keep an inventory of what you need to pack, you are going to have a hard time figuring out if you have missed something or not. But don’t worry, we have some ideas about that too!
Firstly, write down everything you put inside a box. Use that sheet of paper and stick it to the side of the box you have just filled. That way you can know what is inside it at a glance (and it will be easier to determine whether it can safely go on top or remain at the bottom of the box stack).
An interesting side of packing is unpacking. But that cannot be done efficiently, if you do not know which boxes go where once you’ve moved. So how can you make the situation better? By color coding! Mark the boxes with colored stickers, which correspond to a room in the house. For example, white can be kitchen, blue can be bathroom, green can be living room, pink can be bedroom and so on.
The concept is simple, but makes you much more efficient at everything, and you end up wasting much less time than usual. Nice, right?
The above information is enough to make you much more efficient than you have ever been. However, there are a few other things you can do as well.
Firstly, you should know that there are specialty boxes for certain situation (Flatscreen TVs, china sets, formal clothes, etc.). Secondly, you may actually save on packing time by evaluating which items need to be packed in the first place. Sometimes you just need to declutter and that will save you a lot of time and space!
